OFF-Grid PV Systems
An off-grid solar system is a self-sustained energy system that is independent of the power utility. In day time, it converts the energy of sunlight in to DC power through the PV panels. That power is converted in to AC power through the inverter for further distribution in the homes or buildings to run different electrical appliances. This system consist of battery banks for power storage. During daytime, the energy demands of loads are fulfilled through the solar power. In addition, the power is supplied to the batteries to get charge during the day time. During night time, the power of those charged batteries are used to fulfill the load requirements. This setup gives you freedom to live comfortably independent of the power utility and is recommended for populations located in the rural areas having no access to the power grid.
As there is no standard off-grid system, this system is normally customized to suit the electricity requirements of the customer. The Figure 1 shows the structure of the off-grid system. It consists of the following components and they work as follow:
1. Solar Panels:
The solar panels collect the sunlight and converts it in to DC power. There are different types of solar panels based on the design, technology and power capacity in the market. Each has specific characteristics and are used in specific applications based on the system requirements.
2. Inverter:
This device converts the DC power from the solar panels in the AC power that is further utilized to run different electrical appliances. In addition, it also controls the charging and discharging of the batteries. Hence, this device specifically manages the flow of electricity.
3. Battery Bank:
It is an essential component of the off-grid system. They store energy in the day time and that energy is further used in the time of need when there is no solar power generation or night time to fulfill the load requirements. Its capacity is designed as per the system consideration.
4. Optional Components:
In addition, a generator can also be connected as a backup to recharge the batteries in case of bad weather conditions or continued peak demand for long time. This system works perfectly with the existing wiring in home and it doesn’t require any change in the wiring or electrical appliances of the home.
