How to choose the most cost-effective EV Charger?

With the increasing popularity of electric vehicles, more and more people are choosing to travel with electric vehicles. Not only do you need to buy an EV of your choice but you also need a suitable EV Charger. The following points can help you make the right purchase choice.

1. Confirm the type and power of charging supported by your car

Almost all purely electric cars support AC chargers but some do not support DC charging (this does not affect your choice of AC chargers but it does affect your choice of public chargers when you are on the road).

The higher the power of the charger doesn't mean the faster the charge will be. Generally all EVs can support the basic 3.5kw and 7kw charging modes, while the more powerful 11kw and 22kw chargers require confirmation of your car's support before purchase, otherwise your car will only charge at 7kw or less even with the high power EV Charger installed.

2. Confirm the electricity and installation environment of your home

There are two types of electricity in European homes, 220V single-phase or 380V three-phase. In this case, a minimum required to support the installation of a 7KW EV Charger is 7KW/220v = 31.8A (32A standard). If your home circuit cannot support 32A but only 16A, you may need to purchase a 3.5KW EV Charger/portable charger to avoid the risk of electricity usage.

The 11KW and 22KW chargers are both three-phase. 11KW requires 16A and 22KW requires 32A. In order to determine the current support, it is also necessary to confirm whether the household electricity supports three-phase circuits. If you want to use 380V three-phase electricity, you may need to go to the power supply company to provide relevant documents for application and find a professional technician for installation after the application is approved.

3. Confirm the type of charging interface of your car

Most of the EV Chargers sold in Europe are EU standard type 2, however there are more and more imported cars with different charging ports, so you may need to match the corresponding charging port standard of the imported car.

 

4. Confirm the installation of EV Charger

The installation of the EV Charger involves manual strong electrical wiring which is not recommended for non-professionals. A qualified installer is required to conduct an in-home survey and installation.
